Regular maintenance tasks to keep your microwaves running efficiently.
Clean interior walls and turntable
Wipe the interior walls, ceiling, and floor of the microwave with a damp cloth after splatters occur. For stuck-on food, heat a bowl of water with a tablespoon of vinegar for 3 minutes, then let it steam for 5 minutes before wiping. Remove and wash the turntable plate and roller ring in warm soapy water.
Clean or replace charcoal filter
Over-the-range microwaves with recirculating ventilation use a charcoal filter that absorbs cooking odors. These filters cannot be cleaned and must be replaced every 6-12 months depending on cooking frequency. Check behind the vent grille on the top or bottom of the unit.
Deep clean interior with steam
Heat a bowl of water with lemon juice for 3 minutes, then wipe down walls and ceiling. Food splatters absorb microwave energy and reduce heating efficiency. Clean the door seal to maintain proper shielding.
Inspect door latch and seal
Check the door closes firmly and the latch engages cleanly every 6 months. A misaligned door can leak microwave radiation. If the door feels loose or the unit runs with the door ajar, stop using immediately.
